The Challenge

Nashe Beauty approached GNHP Consulting seeking Health Canada licensing support for its innovative skincare product, Eczema Relief Moisturizing Cream with Prebiotics and Squalane.

While the product’s medicinal ingredients were intended to help relieve symptoms associated with eczema, including skin dryness, irritation, itching, and discomfort, the client also wanted to highlight several premium non-medicinal ingredients that contribute to skin conditioning and overall skin wellness.

Among these ingredients were Inulin and Alpha-Glucan Oligosaccharide, two recognized prebiotics used in topical formulations. Prebiotics are generating significant interest within the skincare and cosmetic industry as research continues to explore their potential influence on the skin microbiome and overall skin health. The formulation also included Squalane, a highly regarded skin-conditioning ingredient known for its moisturizing properties.

During the Health Canada review process, questions were raised regarding the inclusion of the terms “Prebiotics” and “Squalane” in the product name because these ingredients were classified as non-medicinal ingredients. The challenge was to preserve the client’s product identity and ingredient transparency while ensuring full compliance with Health Canada natural health product regulations.

Our Approach

GNHP Consulting worked closely with both the client and Health Canada throughout the review process.

Our regulatory and scientific team prepared detailed responses supporting the inclusion of the terms “Prebiotics” and “Squalane” in the product name. We demonstrated that the ingredients were properly declared, permitted for topical use, and accurately represented within the formulation.

We also emphasized that Inulin and Alpha-Glucan Oligosaccharide are widely recognized as prebiotics and are used for skin-conditioning purposes. While emerging research continues to investigate how prebiotics may support the skin microbiome and contribute to overall skin health, the proposed product claims remained fully aligned with Health Canada requirements.
